About the Item

This gorgeous porcelain sculpture from Hutschenreuther porcelain is of two galloping horses, sculpted in exquisite detail and signed by the sculptor, Max Hermann Fritz. Max Hermann Fritz, or MH Fritz, was born in 1873 in Neuhaus and studied under Lorenz Hutschenreuther. He was a sculptor and medallist know for sculpting religious subjects, figures, animals. funerary monuments, and porcelain designs. He moved to Dresden in 1898 where he did much of his most well-known work such as his numerous sculptures he did for Hartau Church. In the realm of porcelain creations he sculpted many pieces for Royal Porcelain Manufactory Meissen (Hutschenreuther) in Fraureuth and for the Porcelain Manufactory Rosenthal. Many of his works are exhibited in museums in Dresden and elsewhere in Saxony, including four putti made of shell limestone in the rose garden on the banks of the Neustadt Elbe. Fritz died in 1948, Hutschenreuther porcelain is famous all over the world. Founded in 1814 by the family patriarch, Carolus Magnus Hutschenreuther, Hutschenreuther porcelain has remained within the family for nearly two hundred years. He employed artists, craftsmen, and sculptors from all over continental Europe. Hutschenreuther focused on quality and design. Lorenz Hutschenreuther, Carolus’ son, opened in 1857 another porcelain factory in the Bavarian town of Selb. The Selb factory was so well managed that it was able to compete with famous British porcelain brands. These two companies would eventually merge back into each other in the 20th century.
