About the Item

Isidore-Romain Boitel was a prominent sculptor of in the nineteenth century. Born in Paris in 1812, Boitel attended the Ecole des Beaux-arts, where he studied under the well-known sculptors James Jacques Pradier and David d’Angers. Boitel debuted at the official Salon in 1845 with a plaster statue titled Sainte Geneviève à l’âge de huit ans. Working mostly with bronze, he produced many smaller scale sculptures representing various scenes and persons. This particular one is based upon the Character created by Bernadin St. Pierre, in his work titled "Paul and Virginia". Published in 1788, the story tells the tale of two childhood friends living with their families on the isle of Mauritius, then colonized by the French and known as Ile de France. Paul and Virginia grow up surrounded by nature and in touch with their natural world, far from the corruption of society. As they get older, Paul and Virginia fall in love. Their idyllic island paradise comes to a halt when Virginia is sent away to Paris to live with a wealthy aunt. Paul et Virginie records the fate of Virginia as she is corrupted by the artificial, vain sentimentality of the French upper class on the eve of the French Revolution. Bernardin de St. Pierre provides a criticism of the social class divisions by juxtaposing them with the perfect equality found on the island of Mauritius where all inhabitants share their possessions and work to cultivate the land they own. Paul and Virginia served as the subject of a great variety of artistic enterprises. Artists such as Henri Pierre Blanchard and Isidore Romain Boitel both explored the natural subject of Paul and Virginia through their own styles. Paul and Virginia are both immortalized in a memorial to Bernardin de St. Pierre in the Jardin des Plantes in Paris.
