jd Hansen is an American sculptor whose work explores the tension and interplay between vulnerability and strength, using human and animal forms rendered in bronze and stainless steel. Her unique signature element—welded copper handwriting—wraps around or emerges from the sculpted forms, embodying unspoken thoughts, memory traces and the non-verbal aspects of communication. Over the past two decades Hansen has expanded the scale of her work from intimate gallery pieces to monumental outdoor installations, including a 10-foot version of “Resonance” installed at the Four Seasons Hotel in Florence and “Valley of the Sunrise,” an over-life-size horse with a copper-text blanket acquired for several private estates. Represented by major U.S. galleries and collected internationally, Hansen continues to push the boundaries of figurative sculpture, bridging classical technique with contemporary concept.
