About the Item

Eugene Antoine Aizelin (French, 1821-1902) Patinated Bronze of Psyche
By Eugene-Antoine Aizelin
Located in New York, NY
This fabulous figural bronze statue of Psyche by the Barbedienne Foundry is simply exquisite. Remnants of a lovely green oxidation, nestled within the corners, curves and crevices of this contemplative Psyche statue, enhance the beauty of the overall composition by further defining the crisp modeling of the piece as a whole, highlighting delicate details such as her wavy pulled up locks and the inset ornamental details of the pillow she is perched upon. Psyche, the goddess of the soul, is a figure that embodies the eternal quest for self-discovery and the intricacies of human emotion. In ancient mythology, Psyche is renowned not only for her unmatched beauty but also for her enduring journey of love, suffering, and ultimate reunion with her divine lover, Eros. This sculpture captures her ethereal grace as well as the complexity of her tale, skillfully portraying her in a moment of contemplative serenity as she reflects upon human vulnerabilities. The goddess is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Each curve and contour of the sculpture speaks of her multifaceted story—a narrative of love's triumph over daunting trials. Psyche, thus, serves as a reminder of the soul's capacity for growth, love, and transcendence.
