About the Item
"Henry," Basswood, Acrylic Paint, Milk Paint, Prismacolor, 8 x 4 x 2 1/2 nches, is one of an extensive series of intricately carved portrait heads in wood and paint by an artist who fully understands the importance of personality, nuance, direct expression, and intensity of focus.
Ranging in height from 8 inches to 14 feet, there’s a directness to Brubaker’s wood carvings of portrait heads and figures which touches on aspects of American Folk Art, but the subtleties and range of emotions expressed are most certainly the work of a highly sophisticated and well trained artist.
Joe Brubaker has compared his “artistic journey” to “driving on a winding road I’m familiar with, but at midnight with no headlights on.” Considering the clear confidence he demonstrates in the execution of these extraordinary and delightful wood sculptures, one can only imagine it’s the risk of destruction that would cause Brubaker to be anxious - with their intricate attention to detail, paint and assemblage, they appear effortless in the manner of all great works of art but we know they are not.
Joe Brubaker graduated from Sacramento State University in 1975 and received an M.F.A from UCLA in 1980. His work has been exhibited primarily in California, in over 23 solo gallery exhibitions and over 20 gallery group shows, and in museum exhibitions and projects at the San Francisco Museum of Craft and Design, the Palo Alto Art Center, the Cannon Art Center, the Bakersfield Art Museum, and numerous “Exquisite Garden Collective Art Installations” in Jackson Hole, Wyoming and in California in Campovida, Oakland, Carlsbad, and Hopland.
Joe Brubaker is the recipient of a Marin Arts Council Grant and a Full Fellowship Award from the Vermont Studio Center and has taught extensively in the San Francisco Bay area and in Los Angeles.
His works are in numerous private collections.
Joe Brubaker has been represented by the Beth Urdang Gallery since 2004.

Joe Brubaker
Joe Brubaker was born in Lebanon, Missouri and raised in Southern California. He received his B.A. from Sacramento State University, then attended UCLA where he earned his MA and MFA. Joe describes his work in the following words, "My work ranges from all-wood simplistic carvings with calm and straightforwardness as an intention, to found-object-assembled sculptures which are purposefully cobbled together bricolage style. The pieces range from 8 to 10 inches tall to massive forms as large as 14 feet. I meander back and forth between the two directions and find that the artistic cross-training keeps my hand and eye fresh. I come from an "anything goes" perspective of creating and would describe my process as 3-dimensional collage. I also paint, draw and write poetry. I compare my artistic journey to driving on a winding road I'm familiar with, but at midnight with no headlights on."
