About the Item

This striking, characterful bull is a wonderful, early, and truly unique piece by the Russian/French sculptor Joseph Constant (1892-1969). Dating from the 1940s, this animal subject was hand-modelled—as opposed to cast—making it a singular piece that bears the direct touch of the artist. This powerful figurine will be a constant presence on your mantlepiece or shelf. Joseph Constant was born in Jaffa (then Palestine) as Joseph Constantinovsky. He grew up in Odessa, where he entered the Academy of Fine Arts in 1914. His early life was marked by tragedy and upheaval: after his father and brother were killed in a 1919 pogrom, Constant and his wife left Russia for Palestine. After a brief period in Tel Aviv, Constant traveled through Egypt, Turkey, and Romania before settling permanently in Paris in 1923. In Paris, he immersed himself in the artistic circles of Montparnasse, which he later described in his book "La Cité des peintres." Adopting the pseudonym "Michel Matveev", Constant became a successful writer, publishing his first book in French in 1928. As a sculptor and painter, he exhibited at both the prestigious Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants in 1928. Following World War II, Constant became increasingly recognized as a sculptor in France and abroad. He specialized in animalier subjects, and the powerful stance of the Bull presented here is highly representative of his expressive work. Works by the artist are held in important institutions, including the Museum of the Art and History of Judaism in Paris and the Museum of the 1930s in Boulogne Billancourt. His studio in Ramat Gan, Israel, later became a museum after his death. Our Bull, hand-modelled in plaster, is signed to the back of the animal.
