About the Item

Larry Young (American, born 1943) is a sculptor based in Columbia, Missouri, whose work spans over 50 monumental outdoor installations worldwide. Though he first achieved distinction as an Olympic medal-winning race-walker, Young turned his disciplined energy toward sculpture, founding his own foundry and exploring fluid forms in bronze, stainless steel and other media. His public sculptures in Columbia include Marathoners (2007) in Flat Branch Park and Nexus (1996) at Boone Hospital Center, both demonstrating his interest in motion, human spirit, and the interplay of negative space. Young’s work often reflects his background in dance and athletics, lending his large forms a sense of dynamic balance. Our piece, Dancing Figures, while small in scale relative to his public work, expands on these themes: the figures curve into one another and rotate on their base, bringing literal kinetic motion to the visual flow of form, and linking the gallery setting to Young’s outdoor legacy.
