New York born Leo Friedlander was a prodigy from the age of twelve exhibiting a series of figural drawings at the Art Students League considered to be of the quality of a student far beyond his age. At the age of fourteen he was promoted to modelers apprentice at a Klee Brothers ornamental shop where, for the next six years, he honed his skills. From 1908 to 1911 he studied at the prestigious Ecole des Beaux Arts in Brussels and Paris and in 1912 was awarded his first public commission, sculpture motifs for the National Memorial Arch in Valley Forge, PA. Winner of the prestigious Prix de Rome prize in 1913, Friedlander would spend the next three years as a fellow at the American Academy in Rome studying antique sculpture and culture throughout Italy and Greece. Established in 1663, the Prix de Rome’s mission was to send the most promising artists, architects, and composers to Rome to learn classical style, motifs, and culture from the old masters, a prize that would all but ensure the recipient would become a key figure in shaping art and culture upon their completion.
