About the Item
An impressive and monumental French antique figurative group bronze statue, titled 'Au Loop, by Louis-Auguste Hiolin (1846-1910), Beaux-Arts period, Paris 1874.
This very finely sculpted and patinated figural bronze statue, “Au Loup” (“Chase the Wolf”) depicts a young shepherd and his dog who, after discovering their fallen lamb, are in pursuit of the unseen wolf responsible for its demise. At the young shepherd's feet lies the body of a sheep from his heard. Within his grasp is his staff while his other arm is outstretched and directing the way for his dog.
The bronze is spectacular and in excellent condition, with wonderful allover excellent patina, it is signed to the base 'Hiolin" and has a plaque both front and rear. The front plaque with; 'Au Loup Par Hiolin, Pars Concors, the other plaque with; 'Salon des Beaux Arts ACQUIS par la Ville de Paris'.
This wonderful and momumental bronze will be safely and securely delivered from our gallery showroom to take pride of place in your home or business. The bronze is very large and weighs about 120lbs, it is the largest of three sizes the artist produced.
Hiolin went to Paris in 1864 and entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts the following year. He was taken prisoner in 1870 during the Franco-Prussian war and could not complete his studies until his return to France. 'Subsequently he received a number of commissions for various monuments to be erected around France.
Hiolin left his native city Septmont (Aisne) in 1864 and entered the École des Beaux-Arts the following year. Soon after, he became employed by the renowned architect Violet-le-duc and sculpted some works for the Château de Pierrefonds. The present model is arguably his best known and was exhibited at the Salon in 1887 and acquired the same year by the city of Paris at the Buttes-Chaumont.
This is the artist's best known work which was exhibited at the Salon in 1874 and bought by the City of Paris and is now located at the Parc des Buttes-Chaumont.
Born on March 18, 1846 In Septmonts , Louis-Auguste Hiolin attended the drawing school in Soissons, then moved to Paris where he worked with Aimé Perray in 1864, and became a student of François Jouffroy at the Beaux-Arts de Paris in 1865. Viollet-le-Duc employed him for the restoration of the Château de Pierrefonds until 1870.
After the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, he completed his studies at the École des Beaux-Arts and made his debut at the Salon in 1874; he continued to exhibit his works there until 1904. He won a 3rd class medal in 1879, a 2nd class medal in 1885 , a bronze medal at the 1889 Universal Exhibition , and a silver medal at the 1900 Universal Exhibition . He became a member of the Société des Artistes Français in 1885.
He was appointed professor of drawing and modeling at the Schools of the City of Paris.
Louis-Auguste Hiolin is the author of the decoration of the Notre-Dame-de-Consolation chapel in Paris , which he carried out almost entirely.
He notably sculpted the War Memorial of 1870 (1901) in Soissons , the Monument to Racine as a child (1910) in La Ferté-Milon, and the statue of " Viollet-le-Duc as a pilgrim of Saint James" at the Château de Pierrefonds.
