Madonna and Child, polychrome stucco relief, workshop of Luca della Robbia. Second half of the 15th century.
Modeled as half-length, the Child holds his mother's veil in one hand, the other on his back; Our Lady grasps his foot.
This intimate composition was one of Luca della Robbia's most prized; Allan Marquand has listed nine versions, including the specimen in the Corsini Collection in Florence. Versions are also found in the carved doorpost of the hospital of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence and in the vault of a cloister of Santa Maria di Castello in Genoa. Luca's early production was in terracotta pigmented with natural colors; it was only after 1440 that he began to devote himself to glazed terracotta.
The iconography of the Madonna holding Christ's foot and Christ grasping his mother's veil, popular in Italian Renaissance painting and panel sculpture, derives from Byzantine icons.
This kind of relief had an extraordinary fortune in 15th-century Italy: modeled from marble or, more often, terracotta sculptures by means of a plaster impression taken from the original, they were then finished by the sculptor and finally painted and gilded. The painter's role is crucial: by highlighting the robes or hair with gold, illuminating the eyes, bringing the complexions to life, the brush helps to accentuate the sweet and affectionate character that invariably distinguishes these compositions. The result is a tone of tight naturalism, of familial intimacy that must have been the most irresistible attraction of this newest generation of sacred images, which soon ended up undermining the role played by triptychs and altarpieces with Marian subjects in domestic devotion. Studies around this branch of Renaissance sculpture have highlighted Tuscany as the epicenter of this very particular production.
Our stucco relief has a clearly legible, raised motif, testifying to the fact that it is one of the earliest replicas of the original. The polychromy has been well preserved: the complexions have been retained as well as the colors of the robes and, in particular, the beautiful gold decoration of the Child's dress, the richness of which indicates a prestigious commission.
The relief underwent conservative restoration with cleaning and consolidation of the original colors at the Nike laboratory in Florence, which specializes in sculptural restoration in the service of the Florentine museum pole.
