About the Item
Dragoness (wood
gold leaf) is a sculpture by contemporary Argentinian artist Marcelo Martin Burgos. As the title suggests, the artwork is of a dragoness, with the distinctive elements of the mythical animal, such as the mouth breathing fire or clawed feet. The artist seems to be influenced by Asian dragon iconography, as his dragon is wingless. This unique piece is in wood covered with a very thin 20k gold leaf produced by the historical handicraft workshop in Venice Mario Berta Battiloro. Fire is used to achieve the final texture, which mimics the skin of a dragon.
Marcelo Burgos’ artistic world is deeply rooted in childhood: children’s dreams and nightmares, populated by fantastic creatures, demons, monsters and dragons, provide the artist with his primary source of inspiration. His series The Monsters draws as much from children’s drawings, cartoons and manga as from African and Toltec sculpture. Far from being frightening, these creatures, with their golden surface, are reminiscent of statues of deities that provide both protection and comfort.

Marcelo Martin Burgos lives and works between Buenos Aires and Madrid. The artist’s golden bronze sculptures are anchored in the childhood universe he is fascinated about. Monsters, dragons, robots and other creatures populating childish imagination are the main subjects of his sculpture activity, also fed by the cinematic production he practices in parallel.
