Mark Kostabi - Divine Embrace - Bronze sculpture
Divine Embrace is a unique bronze sculpture by renowned artist Mark Kostabi, featuring two faceless figures in an intimate embrace, with one adorned with angelic wings. Created in 2014 using the intricate lost wax process, this masterpiece showcases Kostabi’s signature style and themes of love and transcendence. Limited to just 8 pieces, the sculpture’s brown and gold patina enhances its timeless elegance, making it a rare and captivating collector’s piece.
The sculpture was made using the lost wax process at ARA-Kunst in Altrandsberg. For the bronze casting, each individual specimen is first cast in wax using the hollow casting process. This is reworked over the entire surface and then embedded in fireproof material, heated in an oven so that the wax melts out, then the molds are fired for several days and thus prepared for the bronze casting. The bronze is heated to around 1200° and poured into the molds. After the casting has cooled, the molds are destroyed, which is why it is also referred to as "lost mold casting". The bronze cast removed from the mold is then washed and blasted. It is then welded, carefully ground, milled and chiseled in around three repeated passes until the desired appearance is achieved. The sculpture gets its final character through the art of patination. The production requires the highest level of craftsmanship and skill.
Mark Kostabi is an American artist and composer known for his paintings of faceless, mannequin-like figures embedded in surreal landscapes or art historical scenes. His work explores themes such as love, suicide, and the influence of technology on modern life. A prominent figure in the East Village art scene of the 1980s, Kostabi gained attention for his provocative self-interviews and unconventional approach to art production, which involved teams of assistants. His works are in international museum collections, and he lives alternately in New York and Rome.
The main difference to the sculpture "Edge of Forever" by Mark Kostabi is that it is much larger than "DIvine Embrace" and has more editions (edition of 8).
