About the Item
When people first view Marlene Rose, they often feel certain aliveness inherent in the work itself. Her goal as an artist is to inject life into whatever she makes. In simple terms, to make the piece come alive.
Marlene Rose's work has a quality of timelessness reflecting both ancient and modern. When casting sculptures she incorporates relics of modern life, interesting objects that have been cast away, industrial waste items that seem to unite present and past. In the end, the completed piece transcends the sensibility of mere time.
Each piece is hand cast in sand from molten glass in a spectacular process of heat and light. The energy of this dangerous dance of creation reflects in the finished work. They celebrate the unique properties of glass, of transparency, shine and reflection. And because these are cast objects, they hold in their form the memory of the shapes and textures of the materials that formed them; they are fine-grained, rugged or smooth, transparent or translucent, colored or clear.
The glass immortalizes a glimpse of something fleeting beyond the moment, taking that moment and freezing it over. She calls these pieces Evocators. They are kept moments, shards of what one has seen, unnamed emotions, visions, concepts, memories. They call back; and they are the vehicle upon which vision can ride away. The glass is there only to see through.

From the artist: "Marlene Rose is part of the seismic shift in the glass world, away from an emphasis on technique to the realization that all work must stand alone as pure sculptural art. This art just happens to be made in glass, and almost incidentally exploits the rich and unique characteristics of glass to compound its beauty. One is struck by the sheer range of Rose's creations, which run from cool abstraction to figurative spirituality, and thence to vivid and lively invention. Here is a woman in a traditionally male-dominated field. Even so, few artists have the fortitude and technical skill to work at pouring liquid molten glass; the gracious ease of Rose's work belies its fiery birth. What does it take to move an idea into glass? The form, the shape of the piece, must first excite. It must communicate as pure sculpture before the glass adds its blinding beauty. Sand and sweat and fiery flame combine in a dangerous dance of heat and light as Marlene Rose and her team pour the liquid molten glass. Then they carefully lift the poured glass, still fiery hot and swaddled in a layer of sand into the cooling oven. For a week it will slowly cool, and then, and idea of light, be born back into the light..."
