About the Item

Mary T. Bowling (American, 1917-1995) Female Head Mosaic ceramic sculpture Head: 13 x 7 x 9.5 inches Overall: 59 inches tall Provenance: Fred Schmidt (American 1936-2001) Mary T. Bowling was an artist probably best known in the Los Angeles area for her murals. A onetime industrial design student at Caltech and holder of a master’s degree in biology at USC, she came to her art after illustrating medical publications and other scientific journals. She said her background in math and science enabled her to create the complex details in her giant murals, which were on the walls of Ohrbach’s department store, Hillcrest Country Club, the Beverly Hilton Hotel, the General Petroleum Building and Joseph Magnin’s in San Francisco. She also was known for her intricate mosaic plaques and banners. Bowling died in Cambria on Jan. 20 after a long illness.
