About the Item

The British artist Nichola Theakston (1967) has established herself as one of the UK’s foremost contemporary sculptors working within the animal genre. With the ''Sacred Cow'' Nichola shows how exquisite she can capture the feelings and expressions in an animal. Although the bronze sculpture has an edition of 12, every piece has a different hand painted patina, which makes each piece unique. Nichola's work focuses on the vulnerability of existence. She questions our perception of an animal's "personality" and strives to portray elements of our shared experience. It is important for Nichola that animals are displayed with attention and that her images also invite empathy and reflection. In ''Sacred Cow'', Nichola Theakston refers to the special status of the cow in Indian culture, where the animal is considered sacred and deeply respected, especially within Hinduism. In India, cows symbolize life, fertility, and generosity, as they provide milk without taking life. Because of this, harming a cow is often seen as morally wrong. Nichola uses the image of the cow to explore the contrast between spiritual respect and modern attitudes toward animals. By presenting the cow as both strong and dignified, the artwork emphasizes its sacred nature rather than seeing it as a commodity. This invites the viewer to reflect on how cultural and religious values shape the way humans treat animals. The bronze sculpture also raises questions about how sacred traditions survive in a globalized world. While the cow is holy in India, it is often treated very differently elsewhere. ''Sacred Cow'' highlights this tension and encourages respect for beliefs that see animals as more than resources. Studying art at the Jacob Kramer College of Art, then a degree in Fine Art at the Exeter College of Art and Design and finally a Masters-degree in Ceramics at Cardiff College of Art and Design, Nichola has combined academic excellence with an international reputation as a preeminent animalist. Nichola is collected enthusiastically by many who appreciate her exceptional natural ability and skill, coupled with sensitivity and awareness of her subject.
