Architectural Figurative Bust Sculpture in Ceramic Stucco and Copper Leaf is part of Óscar Aldonza Torres’s ongoing Os Aprendices series, composed of five sculptural portraits of elderly individuals placed on diverse bodies made of ceramic or iron. Each work examines the contradiction inherent in the notion of learning at an advanced age—an activity often believed to end in later life but which, in reality, continues indefinitely. The series proposes that we remain perpetual apprentices, shaped by experience, memory and the physical passage of time.
The bust is crafted in white ceramic coated with stucco and finished with oil polychromy and copper leaf, giving the surface a subtle metallic patina that interacts with light. The figure’s clothing is suggested through textured modeling and completed with a polyester cord, adding a material contrast that reinforces the sculpture’s tactile presence. The work’s scale and frontal orientation emphasize the psychological dimension of the portrait, inviting reflection on vulnerability, perseverance and the quiet accumulation of knowledge across a lifetime.
The sculpture is hollow yet robust, designed for stable placement on a pedestal or shelf. It is shipped protected within a custom-built wooden crate, ensuring safe transport.

Óscar Aldonza Torres
Óscar Aldonza Torres (Santiago de Compostela) is a Spanish sculptor working in ceramic, bronze, and mixed media. He studied Volume Techniques at EASD Mestre Mateo, earned a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Seville, and completed an MA in Art Heritage Management at the University of Santiago de Compostela. His work has been exhibited in Spain, Portugal, and France, including the Salon d’Automne in Paris, O Rectángulo de Ouro in Portugal, MIHL Museum in Lugo, and Galería Sabor a Menta in Santiago.
Aldonza’s practice is rooted in expressive, process-driven sculpture, where the human figure emerges through direct modeling, material experimentation, and a strong interest in emotional tension and psychological interiority.
