This unique piece belongs to Óscar Aldonza’s Extravagantes, a series that embraces eccentricity, humour and the expressive potential of material contrast. The body is built from coarse, high-fire clay whose granular surface is partially veiled by flowing wood-ash glaze, producing natural drips and tonal variations that emerge directly from kiln dynamics. The small porcelain head introduces a shift of scale and a lighter chromatic register, evoking the cap of a rusula mushroom and reinforcing the work’s gently surreal character.
Aldonza’s practice relies on direct modelling, intuitive gesture and material experimentation, allowing each sculpture to retain the traces of its formation. Óscar Aldonza Torres
Óscar Aldonza Torres (Santiago de Compostela) is a Spanish sculptor working in ceramic, bronze, and mixed media. He studied Volume Techniques at EASD Mestre Mateo, earned a BA in Fine Arts from the University of Seville, and completed an MA in Art Heritage Management at the University of Santiago de Compostela. His work has been exhibited in Spain, Portugal, and France, including the Salon d’Automne in Paris, O Rectángulo de Ouro in Portugal, MIHL Museum in Lugo, and Galería Sabor a Menta in Santiago.
Aldonza’s practice is rooted in expressive, process-driven sculpture, where the human figure emerges through direct modeling, material experimentation, and a strong interest in emotional tension and psychological interiority.
