About the Item
The intricate retablos of Chicago-based artist Patrick Fitzgerald are his means of paying homage to those who have inspired him throughout his life. Derived from Mexican votive painting, his retablos are offerings to the beloved people and places that dwell in his memory and imagination. Its creation in itself an act of devotion, each retablo is a three-dimensional collage layered with spontaneous decisions and nostalgic references.
Entitled “Retablo No. 7 (The Archive of Black
White Television),” this sculptural retablo has a sinister beauty that recalls cautionary fables and fairy tales. The retablo is described by Fitzgerald as a "spontaneous work based upon a childhood memory," inspired by a newspaper article about the advent of television he discovered in a 1953 issue of the Chicago Herald, now pasted onto the backdrop.
Illuminated by a small skylight overhead, the retablo focuses on a miniature dollhouse in a dusty and overgrown interior, like the long-abandoned attic of an old Victorian home. Striving to make each retablo "more arcane, haunted, and possessed" than the last, the setting is eerie and alluring, textured with pigments and littered with found ephemera to create a sense of age. Set within an found picture frame with ornate molded detail, the vignette has the quiet, melancholy beauty of a moment frozen in time, echoing themes in Fitzgerald's work of nostalgia, loss and time past.

The sculptures and paintings of Chicago-based artist Patrick Fitzgerald are about personal nostalgia, memory, and the beauty he finds in his urban environment. He refers to his body of work as his “Neighborhood of Infinity,” a borrowed term used literally to describe the bounty of materials and creative inspiration he found in the industrial landscapes of his youth. For the last decade, Fitzgerald has been mining his early experiences, re-envisioning the mechanical world of his childhood through the eye of an artist. Born from a fascination with the soap box derby cars of his youth, Fitzgerald constructs miniature soap box cars and the branded attire of their imagined drivers. He builds primarily with found materials - wood, wires, tubing, screen, fabric and collage. The real work involves the finishes: the hand lettering, stages of varying color paint coats, and surface treatments. He always leaves traces of changes or repairs made to a work, adding to the history and evolution of each piece. Futuristic forms imbued with history, each sculpture is an exercise in imagining the future through the lens of the past – or vice versa.
