Gorman had the most commercially successful career of any Native American artist in history. While there are have been a number of skilled Native American artists throughout history, Gorman's artwork transcended the bounds of his community and gained him so much success across American cultural boundaries that he became known as the "Picasso of American Indian art." Born in Chinle, Arizonian, Rudolph Carol Gorman has a traditional Navajo upbringing. His love of art blossomed at an early age, and he spent much of his free time drawing, painting, and sculpting. In 1958, he received the first scholarship given by the Navajo Tribal Council to study art outside the United States. In 1973, he became the only living artists to have his work showcased at the "Masterworks of American Indians" show held at the prestigious Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. A R.C. Gorman original piece was also selected for the cover of the exhibit's catalog. R.C Gorman passed away in 2005 at the age of 74. After his death, New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson flew the state's flags at half-mast in his honor. His art is still celebrated inside and outside of the Native American community and he will forever be recognized for his contributions both to the Navajo culture and American art history.
