The Story:
In "Sitting in Oblivion", Taiwanese artist Ser Uang Huang interprets the ancient Daoist concept of Zuo Wang, which means to sit in forgetfulness, freeing the mind from the self and the world to merge with the infinite. The sculpture features a massive, textured organic form carved from a combination of Camphor and Beech wood. A large, hollowed center represents the "primordial void," symbolizing a mind cleared of distractions.The artist draws deep inspiration from a poetic reflection on this state of being:
"Rest where you can rest. The mind is like the primordial void. Ten thousand thoughts are silenced. Wind passes without a trace, light comes without a shadow. Only in the silent depths do I see myself, and see the heavens."
Perched atop this rugged, abstract landscape is a diminutive monk figure, rendered with a smooth, golden finish. His eyes are closed, his expression serene, appearing completely undisturbed by the vastness beneath him. Ser Uang Huang uses his signature carving style to create deep, rhythmic textures on the main body, suggesting the flow of time and the elements. The juxtaposition of the tiny, peaceful figure against the large, weathered form highlights the power of inner stillness amidst the chaos of the material world.
