This monumental steel figurative sculpture of a moose is designed for the outdoors.
The majestic moose, an iconic national symbol, is the subject of this imposing realistic silhouette by Stan Olthius. The Canadian artist favours using materials that have a raw, natural finish.
Forged from corten steel, this sculpture will naturally weather and over time acquire an even more attractive rust-coloured patina. Several ‘cut-out’ shapes within the body of the moose are intended to represent the animal’s natural habitat in the wilderness, including ponds, leaves and clouds.
“The moose is a creature that has inspired for centuries with its power and gentle disposition. It moves effortlessly through the landscape, embodying ancient wisdom, nobility and a creative spirit; it is a navigator, a shape shifter, a gentle giant. The moose has an ability to move at great speed over seemingly impossible terrain. Thoughtfully placed within its natural habitat, the piece is an elegant tribute to the mighty, enduring animal. In this piece, I pose a larger invitation to open up and examine the many different ways in which we can see ourselves.” Stan Olthuis
Stan Olthuis is from Alberta but studied in Chicago with Henk Krijger, a Dutch artist whose delight and mastery in many visual disciplines imbedded a lasting influence. He continued at the Ontario College of Art and Design, where he studied under many respected working artists: Fred Hagan, Gus Weisman, Nobuo Kubota, Tom Dean, Udo Kasemets, and Dan Solomon are a few. Notable was Tom Hodgson, a member of the Painters Eleven. Stan Olthuis’s work has been exhibited in both Canada and the US. He recently completed a large commissioned sculpture, “Worlds Apart,” for a Toronto-based company.
