About the Item
Charming and uncommon cast-iron folk art figure depicting a young black boy riding atop an alligator, rendered in vibrant hand-painted colors and cast in two joined halves typical of early 20th-century American foundries.
Produced circa 1920–1940, the piece reflects the whimsical novelty figurines and souvenir castings sold throughout the American South during the early part of the century.
Retaining its original, weathered paint surface, the sculpture embodies the expressive character and folky charm that collectors prize in early cast-iron objects. The form is rare, highly displayable, and a distinctive example of period American cast-iron craftsmanship.
The colors—soft aqua, deep teal, cream, and brick red—show appealing, time-earned wear that reveals the character and history of the object without compromising its charm. The figure’s expressive stance and the alligator’s stylized form give the piece strong sculptural presence, making it equally at home in a folk-art collection or as a distinctive decorative accent.
Uncommon in subject matter and compelling in scale, this cast-iron figure embodies the individuality and humor found in early American vernacular art. Examples of this form rarely surface with such intact paint and well-balanced patina.
