About the Item

Art Deco Borzoi dog pair sculpture, circa 1920-1930. Czech manufacture, Royal Duke of Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. The Borzoi dog figurines are made in soft cream tones, hand-painted, with great expressiveness and realism in their gaze. They are presented on a polychrome porcelain base in cream and light green tones, simulating the countryside. They are depicted in motion, a characteristic feature of Art Deco, a period in which animal sculptures were a popular motif, always with an elegant and sophisticated aesthetic. Marks on the base. A work of great delicacy and exquisite detail. Royal Dux is a porcelain company based in the Czech Republic that makes figurines, vases and other ceramics and objects in Neoclassical and Art Nouveau styles. Some of the company's most popular pieces are the Bohemia centerpiece and the Elephant figurine. A member of the Czech Porcelain Group, Royal Dux has been producing its brand of figured and decorative porcelain since 1853. Pattern-making expert Eduard Eichler founded the company in Duchov, Bohemia, in 1860 and ran Royal Dux Bohemia until his death in 1887, recreating historical designs from England, Denmark, and France. At the beginning of the 20th century, the company achieved considerable success thanks to the works of designer Alois Hampel. Royal Dux porcelain pieces are identified by their distinctive pink triangle, which serves as a certificate of authenticity. The company experienced a revival in 1958 due to the exhibition of Jaroslav Ježeken's collection at that year's Brussels World's Fair. In 1992, the Duchov factory was renamed Royal Dux.
