About the Item

Piccolo busto neoclassico in marmo bianco di Carrara raffigurante l'Apollo del Belvedere. Bottega romana, metà del XIX secolo. I busti di piccole dimensioni raffiguranti capolavori antichi appartengono a quella produzione ispirata dal cosiddetto Grand Tour, viaggio di studio e scoperta dei giovani europei ed americani. La profonda ammirazione verso i capolavori conservati nei musei italiani da parte dei turisti ispirò le botteghe di Roma, Firenze a Milano a riprodurre le opere d'arte in dimensioni più piccole e facilmente trasportabili, i cosiddetti "souvenir" del Grand Tour. Iniziò così una gara tra le tre città a chi produceva i souvenir più belli, sfruttando l'abilità di scultori, orafi, pittori, argentieri....Oltre ad essere di bellissimo impatto decorativo, questi souvenir si sono tramutati in veri e propri oggetti da collezione che in asta raggiungono cifre a volte sbalorditive.
