About the Item

Oriental Chinese bronze statuette measuring 16, 5 x 16 cm depicting a sage riding a horse. Note the accuracy of the details, from the tassels on the harnesses to the under saddle with geometric labyrinth decorations, to the tunic with the long, wide sleeves of the bearded elderly sage The object was a censer, the male figure can be removed, and inside the horse there is space to burn incense or other perfumes, the smoke of which comes out of the two holes on the front of the saddle. On stylistic grounds and because of the quality of the bronze, which is thick and features a fine example of polishing, it can be dated to the penultimate century of the Qing Dynasty, or the 19th century.

Chinese Ming Dynasty Bronze Nanhai Guanyin, 16th/17th Century, China
Located in Austin, TX
A decidingly charming Chinese polychromed and gilt cast bronze figure of Nanhai Guanyin, Guanyin of the South Sea, Ming Dynasty, 16th/17th century, China. Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion, is portrayed here as a beatific figure seated upon a raised lotus pedestal over waves. Guanyin is dressed in heavy robes, and wears an elaborate headdress. The small figure of Amitabha Buddha in the headdress positively identifies this figure as Guanyin. Guanyin rests one hand in his lap, holding a cup of pure water said to be able to alleviate all suffering. His other hand is raised, holding a willow branch which is used to sprinkle the healing waters. The two lotus blossoms to either side of Guanyin would originally have supported figures of the acolytes...
