Outstanding Italian Neoclassical Sphinx Carrara Marble sculpture designed as entrance guardian, this mythical lady sphinx statuary display the head and chest of a neoclassical woman and the body of a recumbent lion on a rectangular base. A very noble female bust combined with the powerful body of a lioness, recumbent with her tail lying flat on her back.
In neoclassical decoration, sphinx sculptures were a popular motif, drawing inspiration from both ancient Egyptian and Greek mythology. They often appeared in interiors, adding an air of mystery and sophistication.
