About the Item
Marble bust of Eros known as Eros of Centocelle, white marble, Roman workshop, second half of the 19th century.
The bust resumes from the original discovered in 1770 in Rome near Centocelle on the Via Labicana and acquired by Pope Clement XIV. Today in the Hall of Busts and Statues of the Vatican Museums. The statue of Eros is one of the best-preserved works; it is a Roman reproduction dating back to the second century AD.
Eros is depicted with delicate, sensual features and a thoughtful expression and melancholy; her head, slightly bowed to the side, lets fall a thick curly hair that reaches her shoulders. The sculpture is made of white Carrara marble, finely carved to highlight the young man's hair.
In excellent condition, never underwent restoration. On a mottled marble plinth.
