About the Item
Indonesian mask
Barong, or a masked figure, is an important part of traditional Indonesian dances. Native tribes still perform traditional masked dances to represent nature or ancestor spirits. Masks are joined with music, costume, and dance. Rooted in the culture's animism, the belief that the gods are present in all things, the mask creates a home for the transcendental entities to dwell. With the arrival of Hinduism to the archipelago, the Ramayana and Mahabharata epics began to be performed in masked dance. Masked performers are part of traditional ceremonies such as weddings or funerals and are seen as messengers and representations of deities. Some masks are crafted to house spiritual energy, following specific customs, traditions, and instructions in its construction. The mask plays a role in inviting and hosting the divine energy that will later take over or manifest itself in the dancer’s body. In social or entertainment dances, masks are a symbol or impression of certain characters in the story being performed.
