About the Item
Poole Pottery Volcano Vase
This outstanding small vase is a superb example of British mid-century modern studio pottery, produced as part of the celebrated Poole Pottery “Volcano” collection. The surface is defined by a dramatic, molten red and orange ground, animated by expressive flows of turquoise and deep blue glaze — a hallmark of this highly collectible range.
The Volcano series was originally designed by Leslie Elsden and manufactured at Poole Pottery’s Dorset factory during the 1970s, a period widely recognised as one of the studio’s most experimental and desirable eras. Each piece was individually hand-painted by one of Poole’s skilled paintresses, ensuring that every example is unique.
This vase is the popular Shape 351, standing at an ideal 11cm, making it perfectly suited for use as a bud vase or as a sculptural accent within a curated ceramic display. The base is clearly stamped “POOLE” and bears the confirmed shape number 351, alongside the hand-painted “X” artist’s mark, identifying the individual decorator responsible for this piece.
For collectors, condition is paramount. This example remains in excellent original condition (see photos). Good examples of Poole Pottery Volcano ware in this condition are becoming increasingly difficult to source.
A compelling acquisition for collectors of Poole Pottery, British studio ceramics, and post-war design, this vase offers both visual impact and genuine historical interest.

This piece was painted as an homage to the recent movie and the valiant battles that took place at the Le Mans 24 races in the 1960's between the Ford GT40's and Ferraris.
The canvas is 36" high x 24" wide and would make a lovely addition to any classic car collectors garage or den.
Presently the artwork is unframed although framing could be arranged at an additional cost.
