Small clay head - Remojadas Culture - Classic Veracruz Culture 100 BCE to 800 CE The Remojada cultures is particularly known for its pottery and its hollow ceramic figurines often found across a wide variety of settings, including burials and middens. Often these items were representative of deities, royalty as well as everyday commoners. The art of Classic Veracruz is depicted with extensive and convoluted banded scrolls that can be seen both on monumental architecture and on portable art, including ceramics and even carved bones. At least one researcher has suggested that the heads and other features formed by the scrolls are a classic Veracruz form of pictographic writing. The scrollwork may have grown out of similar styles found in Chiapa de Corzo and Kaminaljuyu. The Classic Veracruz culture (or Gulf Coast Classic culture) refers to a cultural area in the northern and central areas of the present day Mexican state of Veracruz. Veracruz culture existed from roughly 100 to 1000 CE, or during the classic era. While classic Veracruz culture shows influences from Teotihuacan and the Maya, neither of these cultures are direct antecedents. Rather, the bases of this culture seems to have come, at least in part from the Epi-Olmec culture centres. These included Cerro de las Mesas and La Mojarra. The archaeological dating of Pre-Columbian antiquities to their periods and cultures is in part achieved by the variations in the representation of the Gods to that specific culture. Combined with consideration to the items craftsmanship, materials and size. However due to the problematic nature of researching lost civilisations, unfortunately the specifics of the period, use and meaning can remain elusive and are often subject to an educated assumption at best. Pre-Columbian art refers to the visual arts of indigenous peoples of the Caribbean, North, Central, and South Americas. Dating until the late 15th and early 16th centuries and including the time period marked by Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas. Pre-Columbian art thrived throughout the Americas from at least 13,000 BCE to the European conquests and sometimes continued for a time afterwards. Many Pre-Columbian cultures did not have writing systems, so visual art expressed cosmologies, world views, religion and the philosophy of these cultures, as well as serving as mnemonic devices. These cultures produced a wide variety of visual arts, including painting on textiles, hides, rock and cave surfaces, bodies especially faces, ceramics, architectural features including interior murals, wood panels and other available surfaces.
