About the Item

The sculpture, is a Grand Tour scale, derived from the splendid marble that once belonged to the collection of the Roman prelate Eurialo Silvestri. After a brief stay at Villa Giulia, it was purchased by the Medici family at the end of the 16th century and brought to Florence in the early 17th century. The work depicts a satyr captured in the act of performing a dance step, beating time with castanets (kroupezeion in Greek). It is among the most famous sculptures in the Uffizi collection, and thus became one of the most frequently reproduced works for decorative use in suburban villas and luxury residences. The figure is depicted in a pose, with the right arm raised and bent and the left lowered, parallel to the leg. The musculature is accentuated in the legs, particularly in the right thigh and calf muscles, which exert pressure on the kroupezion to produce sound. In classical Greco-Roman art style, with its idealized proportions and attention to anatomical detail, the surface has a smooth, glossy finish that subtly reflects light, highlighting the sculptural details. The figure's hair is rendered in short, curly waves, and the facial features show intense concentration on movement.
