in the form of a lion's leg terminating in overlapping acanthus leaves, the calyx surmounted by a separately-carved protome of a Lion. Ii, p. 773), generally indicates a table support particularly decorated or worked, generally in the form of a human, animal, or part its.The use of equipping furniture (seats, beds, tables, etc.) with feet imitating the paws of animals (in general, felines) dates back to ancient Egypt, and from here it subsequently passed to Mesopotamia and Iranian territory. In archaic and classical Greece, simpler supports were generally preferred, with a straight line but, often, also ending in a feline foot (see furniture). However, there is no lack of more complex examples that are close to oriental types, as evidenced, among other things, by the terracotta models of the sanctuary of Malophoros in Selinunte. To be rejected therefore is the rigidly evolutionary theory of Déonna, which considers the t. animal paw of Roman origin. The greatest diffusion of t. figurato begins with the Hellenistic age (with types that often derive, as in other fields, from Achaemenid models) and continues throughout the Roman imperial age. Moreover, it is only one of the consequences of the industrialization of artistic craftsmanship, typical of the Hellenistic period. The study of these categories of objects, at least for this phase, should therefore take place not according to strictly distinct types, as has mostly been done, but taking into account the interchangeability and undifferentiated use of many elements, which return, for example, in a table, in a chair or in a candlestick. The most common types of t. they are those of marble or stone. There are also numerous bronze specimens, sometimes silver damascened (especially from Pompeii and Herculaneum), and some in wood, as well as a single clay specimen (an Atlas, at the National Museum of Naples). The sources also give us news of t. in ivory, silver and solid gold. In Rome the first examples of particularly luxurious tables were introduced following the victories of Gn. Manlius on the Galatians of Asia (189 BC: Liv., Xxxix, 6, 7; Plin., Nat. Hist., Xxxiv, 14), in a phase, that is, in which in Rome, following the conquests oriental, all the products of Hellenistic artistic handicraft flow in copies. During the first century. to. C. the use of these pieces of furniture became widespread, and the heir of the orator L. Crassus (who died in 91 BC) was able to sell numerous copies. Also in the correspondence of Cicero and in the Verrines there is no lack of references to tables and t's. (Ad fam., Vii, 23, 3; in Verr., Iv, 16, 35; 25, 57; 59, 131). For the imperial period the citations multiply (Petr., 73; luven., Iii, 205; Mart., Ii, 43, 10; xii, 66, 7; Lucian., Lexiphan., 7; Sid. Apoll., 17 , 7, etc.).
