About the Item

Wijnand Driessen (Dutch artist) New Horizon 14 x 7 x 6 cm Cardboard Artist Wijnand Driessen lives and works in Eindhoven but was born and raised in Nuenen, just a stone’s throw from our gallery. The artist’s work immediately stands out, not because it is extremely large, but because he is capable of working in extraordinarily small dimensions. His paintings are sometimes only a few centimeters in size. What makes them even more remarkable is that, on these tiny canvases, he paints monumental buildings. At the same time, he is also able to create larger scale works that speak to us just as powerfully. Wijnand Driessen paints with a loose brushstroke. He works through this stroke until the result is a uniquely free yet realistic representation of what he wants to convey. The reality he depicts is the reality he experienced, not necessarily how things might have been in objective truth. The young artist started as an animation filmmaker. In this field, he contributed to several major productions for companies like Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Warner Bros. In many of these productions, hand-painted backgrounds formed the foundation for the final film image. backgrounds where the characters had yet to appear. Strangely, in 2020, the ‘Corona measures’ became a source of inspiration for Driessen. They resulted in surreal images of completely empty streets in world cities like New York, Paris, and Tokyo. His love for Japan, which began in 2009 during his frequent visits, is clearly visible in his work. The country and its culture fascinate him, and this fascination is translated artistically. His work draws from his experiences in Japan and his travels through other major world cities, all of which are woven into his paintings.
