About the Item
Terracotta life-size male head.
Rushton sculpts all of his busts using live models over the course of multiple sittings. While realistic and classical in character, his sculptures also capture the individuality of the sitter.
Being a sculpture, this piece changes with the light, giving you a different impression depending on time of day and arrangement of lighting. From profile to frontal to three-quarters turn, this piece is dynamic and offers many different aesthetics.
Ideal for a space that needs a unique work of art which can hold attention, Rushton's sculptures come with a classical tradition and a story in progress. He will continuously create more artwork growing as an artist - aiming to achieve the quality and inspiration of the great masters Giambologna, Bernini, Rodin, and others.

William J Rushton
William J. Rushton, a native of Birmingham, Alabama, earned his B.A. in psychology at Colorado College. He then trained for five years at Charles H. Cecil Studios in Florence, Italy, learning the sight-size method of drawing, painting and sculpture. In his last two years, he served as an assistant instructor... which he continues to on his yearly visits back to Florence. Today William spends most of his time in New York City while regularly visiting Birmingham. Dividing his time between sculpture and painting, William continues to grow as an artist and strives to achieve the quality and inspiration of the great masters. A note on the sight-size method... The sight-size technique of drawing and painting originated in the practices of 16th and 17th century European painters such as Titian, Velazquez, and van Dyck and was employed extensively by Sargent and his contemporaries. Using only live models and natural light, this approach allows for an unmediated visual relationship between the artist and his subject. Images are drawn or painted from life and to the scale of life. The artist places the paper or canvas next to the subject and repeatedly moves ten or so steps back between pencil or brush strokes in order to see both the model and the image from a distance and in full. Using an angled light source from above and occasionally a small mirror to refresh the artist’s eye, this time-honored method of portraiture emphasizes and facilitates observation and selection. The aim is to be convincingly representational—the portraits bear a striking likeness to the models—but also interpretive. Figures are somewhat impressionistic when viewed at close range but gain clarity and strength when viewed from afar. William employs a similarly active approach to sculpting heads, moving back and forth from both sculpture stand and model as he shapes the clay. Sculptures are likewise life-size.
