Artist Biography: Born in 1975 in the Netherlands, Henk Jan Sanderman currently lives and works in a small town in central Holland. In his studio, he creates intricate oil paintings alongside porcelain and bronze sculptures. Sanderman’s work is defined by a unique blend of humorous realism, showcasing objects and diverse subject matter in exquisite detail against stark black and white backgrounds. Focusing primarily on humorous hyperrealism, Sanderman places his subjects against these minimalist backdrops, allowing for greater interaction and emphasizing his intense attention to detail. His works exude an endearing ambiance, enhanced by their light-hearted qualities. His current pieces demonstrate an innovative merging of canvas and sculpture, culminating in a contemporary body of installations. Henk Jan’s art has been featured in notable publications, including Palet Magazine and Atelier Magazine, and exhibited at esteemed institutions such as the Coda Museum, Stadsmuseum Harderwijk, and Museum De Fundatie. In 2014, he gained recognition by participating in the television program “Sterren op het Doek,” where he created a portrait of Seth Gaaikema. Due to his impressive performance, he was invited back for the final season in 2015, recognized as one of the best artists of the past nine seasons.
