Tim Bessel’s career marks a confluence of surfing experience and artistic inspiration to create some of the best custom surfboards in the world. Surfboard shapers and surfers alike, from all over the world, know the name, Tim Bessell.
At a very young age, Tim Bessell was exposed to the infectious world of art by his mother, which would coincidentally influence his future to come. At only thirteen years old, Tim was making a name for himself as a surfer in his home town of La Jolla, California when he also began shaping surfboards, becoming one of the youngest surfboard shapers in the industry.
Three years later Tim moved to Hawaii to prove he has what it takes to be a shaper on the North Shore. He began shaping custom surfboards for Lightning Bolt, one of Hawaii's premier surfboard manufacturers known for the infamous lightning gun shape of the 70's ridden by legendary Gerry Lopez. In fact, Tim Bessell would later become one of the few shapers allowed to manufacture surfboards under the Lightning Bolt name.
After legitimizing himself as a shaper, Tim returned to San Diego, California to open Bessell Surfboards. By 1987, Bessell Surfboards had grown into one of the largest surfboard manufacturers in Southern California. Tim also made a name for himself as an artist, with exhibitions as far away as Japan.
To date, Tim has produced over 46,000 surfboards. His boards have graced the covers of Surfer Magazine, Surfing Magazine, Beach Culture, and countless other surfing magazines. “Using racial conflict as a starting point, I juxtaposes various fibers with a variety of found materials using free form weaving, coiling, knotting, wrapping and jewelry making techniques. Meticulously collected materials, transformed by their collective memory become “social fabric” weaving together contemporary issues and personal narratives.
100-foot extensions of rope, twine, and yarn impeccably wrapped, woven, tied and embellished with recycled beads, ribbon, lace, tape and bottle cap bobbles lures you into my hue-imbued, enmeshed installations symbolizing natural hair. These bold albeit whimsically twisted and locked forms gingerly invite the audience into off the-wall conversations about micro aggressions against black women and their hair.
Community art making is also key to my process. Multi-disciplinary experiences pairing people, food, wine, music and art, create a safe space to explore themes such as equity & inclusion, sustainability and personal wellbeing.”

Curt Stenvert was an Austrian avant-garde artist who initially worked as a painter. His artistic practice gradually expanded to include cinematic works and object art. His works are still internationally acclaimed today.
He received his artistic training through his studies at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna. He studied there with Albert Paris Gütersloh and Fritz Wotruba, which enabled him to deal with aspects of movement and perspective. This resulted in his aluminium plexiglass sculptures. His cinematic works were also influenced by his preoccupation with movement. Movement became a central motif in his works. Stenvert introduces the viewer to the biological, psychological, sociological and philosophical conditions of human existence. He developed experimental, feature-length and documentary films, which won international awards. He had solo museum exhibitions in Sweden, Italy and Germany and took part in the 1966 Venice Biennale. Born and raised in Atlanta, Kristofer Laméy has brought much to the southeastern art and design table.
From debuting his unique design perspective in the 2007 ICFF in New York City and showcasing his Art at Aqua during the 2008 Art Basel in Miami, to his solo Museum of Design Atlanta (MODA) exhibit titled “Serving Form” in 2010, Kristofer is best known for his one-off commissioned sculptural art forms. His work has found a place in homes and collections across the globe.
One of his most ambitious design challenges was solving a decades-long problem in the aviation industry: How to more efficiently design and install jet aircraft interiors. This was the birth of AIMS.
Kristofer’s work straddles a fine line that resides between art and design. Many, lost within the engineering of his creations, like to push his work out of the category of art and into the realm of design. This line is the fulcrum that leverages his work into a playing field of his own, and he is proud of that. Those looking for solutions in the marketplace that are in need of an outside perspective to differentiate a product benefit from his fresh and creative approach to modern manufacturing.
