Born in Indiana, Caroline Lloyd first studied at the Convent of Notre Dame in Milwaukee. She later moved to Paris where she studied under Robert Wierick at the Ecole des Arts Appliqué à l’Industrie and, subsequently, at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière in Montparnasse. In France, Lloyd was made welcome in Modernist artistic circles and rapidly achieved both commercial and critical success. She exhibited widely, including at the Salon D'Automne, the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon des Beaux Arts among numerous other ateliers and galleries. At the Paris International Exposition of 1937, Lloyd's was awarded a medal and the exhibited work was purchased by the French government for the permanent collection of the Jeu de Paume Museum. In 1939, Caroline Lloyd was made an Associate Member of the Société Nationale des Beaux Arts, a rare honor for a non-French artist.
Returning to Los Angeles on the outbreak of war, Lloyd continued to sculpt and exhibit successfully as a member of the California Art Club, including at the Golden Gate International Exhibition (1939), Stendhal Gallery (1941) and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1942, 1944). Her retrospective was held at the Los Angeles Art Association (1945-6). Caroline Lloyd is well-listed in all relevant reference works including Who Was Who in American Art, the Dictionary of American Sculptors, the Biographical Encyclopedia of American Painters, Sculptors and Engravers and Hughes' Dictionary of California artist. We are pleased to offer a lyrical figural bronze by this notable American Modernist.

17.5 in. h. x 5.75 in. w. x 6 in. d.
The artist was born, raised and trained in Italy. During one of his exhibits (at San Marcos in Rome) the Director of a New York Gallery asked him to come to New York to work for him. The American Consul, before issuing his visa, asked Spampinato to create a bust of him. In exchange, the Consul paid for his passage on the boat to New York. In New York, he worked with his brother Clemente Spampinato who is a well known sculptor as well.
After moving to Chicago in 1954, he discovered that there was no foundry in the Midwest that could cast his bronzes. So, he opened his own foundry called the Spampinato Art Foundry, casting in the lost wax process. He also started his own private school (Spampinato Art Workshop, Ltd) and did some teaching at the University of Chicago and conducted seminars at Lawrence University in Kansas.
Many of his own works are pictured and cataloged in Volumes 2 & 3 of Bronzes: Sculptors and Founders, 1800-1930 by Harold Berman.
Between 1959 and 1967, Spampinato recast a number of Charles M Russell...
