About the Item
Nu Recomposé (Recomposed Nude)
Assemblage in Extruded Polymer
40 x 40 cm
Description:
Nu Recomposé by Grégoire Mathias is a striking cubist sculpture that reinterprets the human form through light, shadow, and geometry. This 40 x 40 cm assemblage, crafted from extruded polymer, begins as a cubist nude where shadows and highlights are carefully cut and reconstructed into a harmonious, multidimensional composition.
The monochromatic palette emphasizes form and texture, inviting the viewer to explore the interplay between light and structure. Enclosed in a transparent display case, the work evokes both fragility and strength, blurring the boundaries between painting and sculpture in Mathias’s distinct Diachronic Cubism style.
Perfect For:
Collectors of modern sculpture, fans of cubist art, and admirers of innovative techniques in contemporary art. Nu Recomposé is a bold statement piece that celebrates the synthesis of abstraction and form.

About the Artist:
Grégoire Mathias, graduate of the National School of Fine Arts in Paris (ENSBA - École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts), is exhibiting his work at Sotheby's gallery in Périgueux, as well as in numerous galleries across Paris, New York, and Dublin. Mathias is the creator of diachronic cubism, an unexplored branch of cubism that depicts landscapes, interiors, everyday life scenes, and, most notably, the concept of time itself. This unique style is characterized by the deconstruction of subjects and light over specific periods of time. Since 2020, he has been designing UN posters through the World Federation for the United Nations Associations (WFUNA), becoming the first French artist to contribute to the organization after Picasso, Chagall, Miró, and Vasarely.
Beyond his diachronic exploration of time, Grégoire Mathias’s cubist style stands out due to its unique combination of modern cubism with a figurative emphasis. Unlike traditional abstract cubism, his works maintain a strong connection to recognizable forms—such as horses or architectural landmarks—while incorporating the fragmented, geometric language of cubism.
This blend creates a style that bridges modern abstraction with a clear narrative or subject, making his works accessible yet sophisticated. His paintings often evoke a sense of movement and vitality, emphasizing earthy tones and textures inspired by the natural or historic context of his subjects, like the Lascaux caves or French landmarks.

Greg Mathias, born on January 22, 1967, in Périgueux, Dordogne, was steeped in an artistic atmosphere from a young age. His father, a pioneering antiquarian bookseller, introduced vintage posters to the American market, and his mother was a bookbinder, instilling in Mathias a deep appreciation for art and literature. This rich environment laid the foundation for his creative journey. Early in his education, Mathias attended workshops with renowned artists Bertrand Piéchaud in Bordeaux and Jean Pierre Métout in Limoges. In 1985, he moved to Paris and became a guest student at the prestigious École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts (ENSBA), studying under Claude Augereau. By 1986, he had officially enrolled at ENSBA and joined Augereau’s workshop, which was influenced by the cubist master Jean Metzinger. Mathias’ artistic trajectory took a significant turn in 1987 when he participated in a sculpture internship with Claude Bogratchew, contributing to the "Totem AXA" sculpture. This period marked the beginning of a lasting professional relationship with Bogratchew. Following the death of Claude Augereau in 1988, Mathias continued his studies under Pierre Buraglio. His first major exhibition in 1989 at the Galerie de la Maison des Beaux-Arts displayed abstract paintings inspired by Willem de Kooning, though it was initially met with indifference. Despite early challenges, Mathias received commendation for his diploma in 1990, which led to a prestigious exhibition at the ENSBA premises. Later that year, he received a commission from Jack Rennert to paint a large fresco in New York, which further fueled his artistic evolution. During his time in Manhattan, he developed "diachronic cubism," a unique style capturing subjects from various temporal perspectives in a single artwork. Mathias’ career gained momentum in the 1990s. He exhibited extensively in France and the United States, with significant retrospectives and commissions. His diachronic cubism style matured, characterized by its focus on representing the passage of time within a single piece. Notable works included murals for hotels and restaurants in Bordeaux and exhibitions in prominent galleries. In 2001, Mathias served as an expert in posters for Tajan, a leading French auction house, before returning fully to his art practice in 2005. His partnership with the Morateur Gallery in Los Angeles played a pivotal role in establishing his international presence. By 2011, Mathias had created several murals for various establishments, and in 2018, he showcased his creative process in an exhibition titled "L'atelier Grégoire Mathias" at the Castelet d'Excideuil. In 2020, Mathias was commissioned by the World Federation of United Nations Associations (WFUNA) to create a poster for United Nations Day, solidifying his role as the official artist for WFUNA. Most recently, Mathias’ exploration of diachronic cubism led him to Ireland, where he exhibited his work in Dublin this year. His connection to Ireland deepened through his homage to James Joyce, culminating in the donation of his Joyce's "Portrait aux Horloges" to the James Joyce Museum. Today, Mathias' work is exhibited in several galleries in France, New York and Dublin.

“Déplacement” (“Displacement”) exemplifies Grégoire Mathias’s signature Diachronic Cubism — a contemporary evolution of Cubism that captures not only multiple perspectives in space, but also the passage of time within a single frame.
In this work, intertwined faces and figures emerge through rhythmic geometric planes, suggesting both emotional movement and physical transition. The warm palette of ochre and sienna contrasts with sharp greys and whites, creating a powerful sense of fragmentation and reunion. Subtle red linework recalls the artist’s architectural precision, while the composition’s temporal layering evokes fleeting moments suspended between past and present.
This piece reflects Mathias’s ongoing exploration of the human form through temporal geometry — a visual dialogue between motion, memory, and identity.
