About the Item

Oscar Lenz Echo, 1904 Signed and dated on base: Oscar L Lenz 1904 Bronze 70 1/4 x 25 x 25 1/4 inches Oscar Lenz was an American sculptor born at Providence, Rhode Island. He received his early education in his native city from private tutors. At only 12 years old, just after his father's death, Lenz entered the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, remaining there until he came to New York, when he was 17. Lenz became a member of the Art Students' League, studying under Augustus Saint-Gaudens. Saint-Gaudens took an interest in the promising young artist allowing him to execute part of the modeling of the sculpture of Diana for the Madison Square Garden tower. Lenz went on to Chicago and executed part of the designs of the Court of Honor and then travelled to Paris, where he studied under Henri-Léon Saulnier. On his return to the United States Lenz created the ornamental work for the new bridge in Buffalo.

"Untitled" Sidney Gordin, Abstract Metal Steel Sculpture
By Sidney Gordin
Located in New York, NY
Sidney Gordin Untitled, 1958 Incised with initials Welded Steel 15 x 10 1/2 x 6 inches Provenance: Eric Firestone Gallery, New York On October 24, 1918, Sidney Gordin was born in Chelyabinsk, Russia. He spent his early years in Shanghai, China. At the age of four, he moved with his family to New York. Gordin’s nephew, Eliot Nemzer recalls that when Gordin was a child he attended “a dinner party with his parents. Someone showed him a book of pictures that when thumbed through quickly made the image appear to move. This person then gave him a wad of blank papers and something to write with. Sid created a similar type of moving image with his materials. All the adults at the party became quite excited [and] praised his efforts. Sid told me he thought this was a pivotal experience in guiding him towards his vocation.” During his formative years at Brooklyn Technical High School, he briefly contemplated the idea of becoming an architect; yet, by the time he enrolled at Cooper Union, he was determined to become a professional artist. There, he studied under Morris Kantor (1896-1974) and Leo Katz...

Italian Bronze Sculpture of Nude Woman, Mid 20th Century
Located in Beachwood, OH
Mario Spampinato (Italian 1912–2000) Nude Bronze Signed on base 17.5 in. h. x 5.75 in. w. x 6 in. d. The artist was born, raised and trained in Italy. During one of his exhibits (at San Marcos in Rome) the Director of a New York Gallery asked him to come to New York to work for him. The American Consul, before issuing his visa, asked Spampinato to create a bust of him. In exchange, the Consul paid for his passage on the boat to New York. In New York, he worked with his brother Clemente Spampinato who is a well known sculptor as well. After moving to Chicago in 1954, he discovered that there was no foundry in the Midwest that could cast his bronzes. So, he opened his own foundry called the Spampinato Art Foundry, casting in the lost wax process. He also started his own private school (Spampinato Art Workshop, Ltd) and did some teaching at the University of Chicago and conducted seminars at Lawrence University in Kansas. Many of his own works are pictured and cataloged in Volumes 2 & 3 of Bronzes: Sculptors and Founders, 1800-1930 by Harold Berman. Between 1959 and 1967, Spampinato recast a number of Charles M Russell...
