About the Item

Large Early 20th Century Figurative Bronze Sculpture of a Youth Releasing an Eagle Attributed to Otto Poertzel (1876–1963), Germany This striking early 20th-century figurative bronze sculpture presents an impressive portrayal of a youthful nude figure releasing an eagle into flight, a powerful allegory of strength, freedom, and mastery over nature. Executed in bronze with a rich natural patina and subtle traces of verdigris, the sculpture possesses a commanding vertical presence and a refined sense of classical proportion. The composition is both athletic and lyrical: the elongated figure stands poised on a faceted base, arms raised in a dramatic upward gesture as the eagle prepares to hunt. The carefully modeled anatomy reflects a deep understanding of the human form, while the eagle—sculpted with muscular wings and taut energy—adds symbolic and visual tension to the work. The result is a dynamic dialogue between man and animal, characteristic of serious academic figurative sculptureof the period. The work is unsigned, but is attributed to Otto Poertzel, a significant German sculptor known for his mastery of form and material. Poertzel trained as a porcelain modeler at the Kister Factory in Scheibe before studying at the Technical Academy for Porcelain in Sonneberg under Professor Moller. By 1900 he was working independently in Coburg, later establishing his own studio in Munich in 1908 and attending the Academy of Art under Professor Hildebrand. In 1913, he was appointed professor. His work was exhibited internationally, including presentations of his larger sculptures at major world fairs such as St. Louis and Brussels. Mounted on a polished marble base, the sculpture has been fully restored and is ready to place, making it suitable for both refined interior settings and architectural environments. Its impressive scale and verticality allow it to function as a dramatic focal point in a gallery, private collection, or grand interior. A compelling example of figurative bronze sculpture, appeals to collectors of academic sculpture, German early modern bronzes, and classical revival works, offering historical significance, sculptural excellence, and enduring visual impact. Seated Mercury Life-size Grand Tour Bronze Sculpture
Located in Palm Beach, FL
Seated Mercury (Hermes) — Grand Tour Life-Size Bronze Italian School (possibly Naples) Italy, Late 19th–Early 20th Century This commanding life-size Grand Tour bronze depicts Mercury (Hermes) seated in quiet repose upon a rock, rendered with classical authority and exceptional refinement. The youthful god’s finely modeled anatomy, serene, introspective expression, and distinctive winged sandals draw directly from the celebrated ancient prototype, creating a sculpture of enduring presence and balance. Fully restored and ready to place, the bronze presents beautifully for interior display or garden installation, where its patinated surface responds richly to natural light. The composition derives from the renowned Seated Mercury discovered on August 3, 1758, in the peristyle garden of the Villa dei Papiri at Herculaneum. The ancient original—now housed in the Museo Archeologico Nazionale di Napoli—became a touchstone of classical taste and a must-see for Grand Tour travelers of the 18th and 19th centuries, admired for its harmony, restraint, and technical mastery. Cast in richly toned bronze and finished with a nuanced patina, this example exemplifies the Neapolitan tradition of Grand Tour bronzes, prized for archaeological fidelity and sculptural finesse. Its impressive scale and poised silhouette make it a significant focal point in both modern and classical settings—an object that bridges antiquity and the cultivated collecting culture of the Grand Tour.
