About the Item

Beautifully detailed and lifelike, Venus and Cupid share a soft embrace in this remarkable Italian white marble sculpture. The feminine beauty gracefully leans against roughened rockery that masterfully contrasts the supple smoothness of the two figures. Both Venus and her winged son Cupid are delicately poised on one leg, adding a lifelike sense of movement to the sculpture. This dynamism is further enhanced by the diaphanous shawl that wraps around their limbs and their curly flowing locks. The charming image lends a human element to its mythological subjects, highlighting the tender affection between a mother and her child. Innocent yet sensuous, the beautifully carved group displays the extraordinary technical accomplishment and neoclassical grace for which Italian sculptors of this era are so loved.
