Paul Joseph Gayrard was born on 3 September 1807 the son of the sculptor and engraver Raymond Gayrard. He studied under his father as well as under Francois Rude and David d’Angers. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1827 where his skill was quickly recognised and he gained a first medal. He became highly popular, attracting many wealthy clients and achieving a high degree of success during his lifetime. He continued to exhibit regularly at the Salon and won further medals in 1834 and in 1846. He produced many busts of society figures as well as animal groups. This particular sculpture is part of a series of anthropomorphic groups of monkeys riding horses. As well as smaller works he also sculpted a number of monuments for churches and public buildings including the Statue of Universal Suffrage at the Palais Bourbon.
A number of his works are held by museums and galleries including the Prado Museum, Madrid and at the Louvre.

A wonderful sporting horse portrait by Alfred Wheeler of the racehorse Diamond Jubilee with Jockey Up. A bay stallion is depicted standing side on in a landscape, most likely Newmarket Heath, with another racehorse and jockey in the distance. The horse’s head is slightly turned towards the viewer to reveal a white diamond shape mark on his forehead running into a line down his face. On his lower forelegs can be seen leg wraps which were used during training and exercise. Research has identified the jockey as being Herbert Jones...

A pleasing landscape painting of a plough team at rest next to a barn by Thomas Blinks. Three horses are shown eating hay from a cart in the shade of a barn. Two figures and a dog are also depicted taking their repast. On the left of the scene, open fields can be seen through a gate whilst in the far distance a church and other buildings can be made out on the brow of a hill.
Thomas Blinks was born in Maidstone, Kent on 29 October 1853 to Richard Blinks and Eleanor Poile. His father was a master butcher in Ticehurst and the family lived above the shop, which is still operates as a butchers today. Thomas initially worked for his father but his talent for art soon took him in another direction.
He married Louisa Anne Winterbottom on 11 April 1874, at Rye, Sussex and together they had 3 children. They lived in Hawkhurst, Kent before moving to Hackney, London in 1878. Whilst largely self- taught, Blinks would have learnt basic anatomy from working with his father, but he also spent time at Tattersalls canine and horse auctions...
