Condition: This work is in excellent conditionDonald Baechler (November 22, 1956 – April 4, 2022) was an American painter and sculptor associated with the Neo-expressionist movement of the 1980s. He lived and worked in Manhattan and Stephentown, New York.
Early life and education
Baechler was born in Hartford, Connecticut, to Marjorie (née Dolliver), a journalist and quilter, and Henry Jules Baechler, an accountant. He was one of four children raised in a Quaker family. After the death of his mother, Baechler developed an early interest in art and began painting with his maternal grandmother, who was also a painter.
He attended Westtown School, a Quaker private school, for the final three years of high school, where a strong art program helped solidify his decision to become an artist. Baechler studied painting at the Maryland Institute College of Art from 1974 to 1977, earning a B.F.A., and attended Cooper Union from 1977 to 1978. Dissatisfied with the New York art school environment, he continued his studies at the Städelschule in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, where he spent a year.
Baechler returned to New York City in 1980 and worked as a guard at Walter De Maria’s New York Earth Room. In 1981, he briefly worked as a studio assistant for artist Joseph Glasco, whose collage techniques influenced Baechler’s early black-and-white and mixed-media works.
Career
By the early 1980s, Baechler had become part of the emerging Lower Manhattan art scene, exhibiting at venues such as Artists Space and the Drawing Center. He was represented by Tony Shafrazi, alongside artists including Keith Haring, Kenny Scharf, and Jean-Michel Basquiat, though Baechler maintained a distinct position within the group. He consistently described himself as an abstract artist, emphasizing formal concerns such as line, balance, and composition over narrative or political content.
Baechler’s work is often characterized by simplified, childlike imagery—flowers, toys, everyday objects—drawn from an extensive personal archive of collected images. Critics have noted that while these motifs evoke childhood and nostalgia, his work also reveals darker psychological undercurrents and a sustained engagement with art history. His sources ranged from classical art and the New York School to folk art, outsider art, popular culture, and childhood memory.
Although best known as a painter, Baechler produced a substantial body of sculptural work, frequently compared to that of Roy Lichtenstein, Alex Katz, and Carroll Dunham. He worked across media throughout his career, maintaining a playful yet formally rigorous approach to image-making.
Death and legacy
Baechler died of a heart attack on April 4, 2022, at the age of 65.
His work is held in the permanent collections of major institutions, including the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts Boston, the Stedelijk Museum, and the Centre Pompidou. Two paintings and a sculpture by Baechler are permanently exhibited at the restaurant Caravaggio on Manhattan’s Upper East Side.

Baechler's source material drew broadly from classical art history, the New York School, contemporary art, folk art, outsider art, pop culture and childhood. Baechler has said that 'I hold onto absolutely everything I would guess out of every thousand images I save, I probably use one or two - It's necessary to accumulate all of these things to get to the point of what's important". He showed at Sperone Westwater, Cheim Read, Kunstalle in Basel, Switzerland, Thaddaeus Ropac in Paris, Museum der Moderne in Salzburg. His work has been collected by Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Museum of contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and the Pompidou Centre in Paris.
