About the Item

Artist: Doug Coupland Title: Bottle No. 5 Downey Year: 2002 Medium: Hand-carved wooden and painted oversized bottle Description: ADDITION offers a rare opportunity to acquire "Bottle No. 5 Downey," an iconic sculpture by renowned Canadian artist and author Douglas Coupland (@douglascoupland). This striking hand-carved and painted oversized Downey bottle originates from Coupland's seminal 2001 exhibition "Spike," which poignantly explores themes of consumerism and environmental concerns, prompted by a personal family crisis. Originally exhibited at Monte Clark Gallery in Vancouver in 2001, "Bottle No. 5 Downey" was later showcased at Totem Gallery in New York. The piece was also featured in major exhibitions, including the Vancouver Art Gallery's retrospective, "DOUGLAS COUPLAND: EVERYWHERE IS ANYWHERE IS ANYTHING IS EVERYTHING" in 2014. Additionally, it caught the attention of The New York Times in the article "Saving the House Next Door," where it was prominently displayed at the bottom of Coupland’s stairs. Artist Background: Coupland's artistic journey began with literature, publishing thirteen novels and contributing to prestigious publications worldwide. In 2000, he transitioned to visual art, quickly gaining international recognition with retrospectives at the Vancouver Art Gallery, Royal Ontario Museum, and Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (2014-2015), as well as "Bit Rot" at the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art in Rotterdam and Villa Stücke in Munich (2017). A true multi-hyphenate, Coupland is a member of the Royal Canadian Academy, an Officer of the Order of Canada and the Order of British Columbia, and a recipient of the Lieutenant Governor's Award for Literary Excellence.
