About the Item

This intriguing interactive sculpture is designed by the Japanese born artist Natsuki Takauji. A gently curved metal and composite dark brown wood chair is angled so that the viewer can comfortably recline and look up into a convex mirror that can only be seen by the seated participant, their face framed against the sky and trees. Natsuki, as an interdisciplinary visual artist living in New York, creates unique pieces that often challenge and play with viewer’s beliefs and perceptions. “While in an open public space, viewers can be absorbed in a private self-reflecting moment, juxtaposing the self-image against the surroundings such as trees in the garden and the sky: they are physically out in public, but mentally slipping into their internal visions. The concept of the work was inspired by the “Window” series.” Natsuki Takauji She studied visual and literal art at The Art Students League of New York, and Waseda University in Tokyo, Japan. She is an instructor at The Art Students League of New York, a co-founder of The Artist Gardener NYC designed to activate communities through art and educational programs in public gardens, and a director of Metal Sculptures at Sculptors Alliance, Inc. Natsuki has exhibited in New York, New Jersey, Florida and at the Venice Biennale in Italy. Her work is held in both private and public collections in the U.S. and Canada.
