About the Item

Edition of 25 'Otter Pup' by Richard Smith, a bronze sculpture of an otter pup, finished with a mottled brown patina, captures the playful charm and delicate curiosity of this young aquatic mammal. The pup is depicted in a lively pose, high on alert, with a rounded body and slightly arched back suggesting alertness and readiness to explore. The sculptor emphasises the soft, dense fur, creating a sense of warmth and tactility, while the expressive face—with bright, inquisitive eyes and a small, sculpted snout—conveys the intelligence and mischievous nature typical of otters. The mottled brown patina enriches the sculpture with depth and naturalism. Variations in tone, from darker earth-like shades along the underbody to lighter highlights on the back and head, suggest the interplay of light on fur and the glint of wetness after a swim. The tactile surface draws the viewer in, inviting close inspection and creating a lifelike impression despite the solidity of bronze. Beyond its physical depiction, the sculpture celebrates the otter pup’s playful spirit, curiosity, and adaptability. It captures a fleeting, tender moment of youth, embodying both innocence and vitality. As a bronze, it becomes a lasting homage to the charm and resilience of one of nature’s most endearing creatures.

'Otter Pup' is a darling little Bronze sculpture. Richard Smith conveys so much character in such simple lines, exemplifying a truly wonderful talent - you can't help but want to tickle this little guy's tummy! The fantastic richly detailed graduated Brown Patina really adds to the depth of the work. Richard Smith works as a part-time sculptor and a part-time gamekeeper on an estate in Hertfordshire, England. On seeing his sculptures the viewer cannot deny Smith's knowledge and love of the animals he creates. Each piece he creates he pays homage to nature and wildlife. Richard J. Smith was born in Luton, Bedfordshire, UK in 1955. He studied illustration at Luton School of Art to a high standard and graduated with a diploma in Technical & Scientific Illustration. He was soon offered a job as a medical artist at the John Radcliffe teaching hospital in Oxford. In 1978 he was painting for galleries as a full time artist with his depictions of wildlife. He has gained an international reputation for his work and is best known for his superb paintings of fish and water. He has exhibited at prestigious galleries such as the Tryon Gallery and W. H. Patersons in London, The Sportsman's Edge Gallery in New York, The Call of Africa in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and the Everard Reed Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa. Richard has exhibited his paintings at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum in the USA and the Natural History Museum and Tring Museum in Britain. He has sold at all the major auctions houses in London, such as Christie's, Sotheby's, Bonhams and Phillips. In the latter part of 2007, Richard was commissioned to produce several fish paintings, for the Sultan of Oman. Callaghan Fine Paintings has commissioned a series of life size bronze birds. His works include British birds such as the elusive Snipe sitting atop a fence post and the beautiful Little Blue penguin, a native of New Zealand. His works are all studied from life whilst either out in the field or in a museum with taxidermy. With incredible attention to detail Richard has breathed fresh air into this medium.
