About the Item
Edition of 25
'Woodpecker' by Richard Smith, a bronze sculpture of a woodpecker, patinated in green and white with an electric red beak, captures the dynamic energy and distinctive character of this iconic bird. The sculptor depicts the woodpecker perched upright, body angled slightly forward, as if attentive to the rhythm of the forest around it. The textured, rugged surface conveys the layered plumage and muscular form, emphasising both strength and agility. The elongated body, slightly flared tail, and strong claws gripping a branch or trunk give the sculpture a sense of balance and readiness, characteristic of a bird constantly on alert.
The patination is striking and expressive. Deep mottled greens and soft whites echo the woodland environment and the natural markings of the bird, while the vivid red of the beak draws immediate attention, highlighting the species’ signature feature and infusing the piece with vitality. Light interacts with the textured surface, accentuating contours and feather details, while polished highlights along the beak and wings enhance the impression of life and motion.
Beyond its realistic depiction, the sculpture embodies the woodpecker’s industrious, determined, and resilient nature. It transforms a fleeting woodland observation into a lasting work of art, celebrating both the bird’s striking visual presence and the rugged beauty of its natural habitat.

Richard Smith b.1955
In his studio in his Gamekeepers cottage on a sprawling Hertfordshire estate, Richard Smith works undisturbed except for the occasional call of a pheasant. Whilst he daydreams of stalking deer and salmon fishing in the Scottish Highlands, his hands and eyes are busy at work on his latest masterpiece. From his 40 years as a successful painter of wildlife, painting for galleries such as Tyron gallery, London, Gladwell and Pattersons, London, Frost and Reed, London and Everard Reed Gallery, Johannesburg, coupled with his life surrounded by, and working with, game birds, it seemed a natural progression, with the support of Callaghan’s, to translate his passion and talent to the medium of bronze. From the elusive Snipe to the tentative Hare, the inquisitive Otter Pup to the majestic Macaw, his portfolio leaves no doubt as to the understanding of his subjects. From the beginning, when the delicate Robin perched upon a terracotta pot was born of his hands, Richards work has wowed wildlife enthusiasts and sportsmen alike. His bronze sculptures have been exhibited at the LAPADA Art
Antiques Fair, the Olympia Art
Antiques Fair and across the State of Florida at the Naples and West Palm Beach Shows, and with his incredible attention to detail, Richard has breathed fresh, Hertfordshire, air into the medium winning him worldwide acclaim In 2013 Richard was invited to exhibit his Pintail Duck at the Society of Wildlife Artists, previously unassuming of his sculpting prowess, this accolade spurred him to create many further pieces in every shape and size and for every budget culminating in Richard being invited by the CLA to produce a perpetual trophy to present to the Best Shot of the Year at the annual game fair. His wish to keep the pieces in small editions and to personally oversee the sympathetic patination of every piece has been adhered to, as he remains as passionate about his work since his first exhibition in 1978.

Witte Roepie Roepie Rupee Calling White Bird Bronze Sculpture In Stock
Pieter Vanden Daele was born in Belgium in 1971. He grew up between lakes and the river Scheldt. The river De Scheldt and the variety of lakes are an ideal environment for fishermen. When his friends went fishing, Pieter took painting lessons at the Oudenaarde academy. At a young age Pieter became fascinated by the underwater world and fauna. In 2000 he worked at an art foundation in Oudenaarde, where he learned how to make molds and how to cast and patronize bronze. His passions came together in 2003 and he started casting bronze sculptures of mainly carp.
The fish that he makes have a special texture, a skin with scales translated into bronze. VandenDaele has developed its own technology for this. Pieter builds the original model from organic material, such as leaves, wood, leather, wax and many other materials. He uses various organic materials in his molds to create special prints and structures in the skin of the bronze. This gives the sculptures so much character that names such as Ferox, Alphons and Ludwig do not surprise us.
The fish are alive, caught for eternity. Just as nature keeps prehistoric fish...
