About the Item

Edition of 25 'Mallard' by Richard Smith, a bronze sculpture of a standing mallard captures the bird’s dignified presence and vibrant character. The duck is depicted upright, feet firmly planted as if surveying its surroundings, with head slightly turned in a naturalistic pose. The form balances solidity and grace, with compact body proportions giving the piece both weight and fluidity. The mottled patina, blending greens, yellows, and browns, evokes the mallard’s striking natural coloration. Deep green tones along the head and neck suggest the bird’s iridescent sheen, while warmer yellows and earthy browns across the body create depth and contrast. Polished highlights accentuate the bill, feet, and edges of the feathers, catching the light and enhancing realism. The tactile surface invites close inspection, allowing viewers to appreciate both the sculptor’s skill and the natural beauty of the bird. Symbolically, the mallard embodies vitality, adaptability, and connection with water and landscape. This bronze sculpture transforms a familiar wildfowl into a timeless study of color, texture, and presence, celebrating the elegance and resilience of one of nature’s most recognisable birds.
