About the Item
'Salmon' is a stunningly elegant Bronze sculpture. Richard Smith conveys so much character in such simple lines, exemplifying a truly wonderful talent. The fantastic richly detailed Patina really adds to the depth of the work.
Richard Smith works as a part-time sculptor and a part-time gamekeeper on an estate in Hertfordshire, England. On seeing his sculptures the viewer cannot deny Smith's knowledge and love of the animals he creates. Each piece he creates he pays homage to nature and wildlife.
Richard J. Smith was born in Luton, Bedfordshire, UK in 1955. He studied illustration at Luton School of Art to a high standard and graduated with a diploma in Technical
Scientific Illustration. He was soon offered a job as a medical artist at the John Radcliffe teaching hospital in Oxford. In 1978 he was painting for galleries as a full time artist with his depictions of wildlife. He has gained an international reputation for his work and is best known for his superb paintings of fish and water. He has exhibited at prestigious galleries such as the Tryon Gallery and W. H. Patersons in London, The Sportsman's Edge Gallery in New York, The Call of Africa in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and the Everard Reed Gallery in Johannesburg, South Africa. Richard has exhibited his paintings at the Leigh Yawkey Woodson Museum in the USA and the Natural History Museum and Tring Museum in Britain. He has sold at all the major auctions houses in London, such as Christie's, Sotheby's, Bonhams and Phillips. In the latter part of 2007, Richard was commissioned to produce several fish paintings, for the Sultan of Oman. Callaghan Fine Paintings has commissioned a series of life size bronze birds. His works include British birds such as the elusive Snipe sitting atop a fence post and the beautiful Little Blue penguin, a native of New Zealand. His works are all studied from life whilst either out in the field or in a museum with taxidermy. With incredible attention to detail Richard has breathed fresh air into this medium.

Richard Smith b.1955
In his studio in his Gamekeepers cottage on a sprawling Hertfordshire estate, Richard Smith works undisturbed except for the occasional call of a pheasant. Whilst he daydreams of stalking deer and salmon fishing in the Scottish Highlands, his hands and eyes are busy at work on his latest masterpiece. From his 40 years as a successful painter of wildlife, painting for galleries such as Tyron gallery, London, Gladwell and Pattersons, London, Frost and Reed, London and Everard Reed Gallery, Johannesburg, coupled with his life surrounded by, and working with, game birds, it seemed a natural progression, with the support of Callaghan’s, to translate his passion and talent to the medium of bronze. From the elusive Snipe to the tentative Hare, the inquisitive Otter Pup to the majestic Macaw, his portfolio leaves no doubt as to the understanding of his subjects. From the beginning, when the delicate Robin perched upon a terracotta pot was born of his hands, Richards work has wowed wildlife enthusiasts and sportsmen alike. His bronze sculptures have been exhibited at the LAPADA Art
Antiques Fair, the Olympia Art
Antiques Fair and across the State of Florida at the Naples and West Palm Beach Shows, and with his incredible attention to detail, Richard has breathed fresh, Hertfordshire, air into the medium winning him worldwide acclaim In 2013 Richard was invited to exhibit his Pintail Duck at the Society of Wildlife Artists, previously unassuming of his sculpting prowess, this accolade spurred him to create many further pieces in every shape and size and for every budget culminating in Richard being invited by the CLA to produce a perpetual trophy to present to the Best Shot of the Year at the annual game fair. His wish to keep the pieces in small editions and to personally oversee the sympathetic patination of every piece has been adhered to, as he remains as passionate about his work since his first exhibition in 1978.

Subrata Paul - Fish
Bronze & Wood, H 31 x W 27 x D 8 inches
About :
Subrata Paul ( b 1972) is one of the empanelled sculptors of Abundant Art Gallery. Subrata Paul’s favoured materials are bronze embellished with wood. His signature fusion of the two different materials with his stitching style lends an unique texture to his sculptures. Our collection, includes some of his remarkable creations including “Fish”, “Goat” and “Bull”.Paul’s ‘Fish’ represents contrasting characteristics. The Buddha like drooping eyes of the ‘Fish’ is contrasted paradoxically against the frenzied fins, reminding us of Medusa’s dishevelled hair. Calmness and restlessness in one form, the ‘Fish’ resembles the life force. It is a metaphor for the inner human strength to swim against the tide of adversities. His ‘The King’ represents an imperial image. The statute is looking towards heaven, as if seeking some inspiration to perform his royal duties. His crown is like a crown of thorns. It is not a pleasant task but it has to be performed. His attire declares he has to modify his own life into the straightjacket of his royal duties. Another creation of his, ‘Bull’ recalls the interpretation of a bison of the Altamira cave paintings. Paul’s ‘Meditation’ series defines peace in different perspectives through various aspects of Buddha figures. Inspired by sculptors such as Sunil Kumar Das...
