About the Item
Edition of 12
'Nico Jnr' by Tobias Martin, a bronze sculpture of the iconic Lowland Gorilla Nico, patinated in black, brown, and white, captures the remarkable presence and personality of this iconic animal. The sculptor renders Nico’s form with careful attention to anatomy, emphasising the powerful shoulders, muscular arms, and broad chest that define the species, while also highlighting the expressive features that made Nico so beloved. The face, in particular, is a focal point: deep-set eyes, a furrowed brow, and a slightly parted mouth convey intelligence, gentleness, and the quiet authority of a dominant gorilla.
The patination enhances both realism and character. Deep black tones across the fur convey density and strength, while subtle browns add warmth and depth to the musculature. White highlights on the face, hands, and chest draw attention to key features, adding contrast and emphasising Nico’s expressive presence. The tactile surface invites close inspection, the varied textures evoking the layered fur and the nuanced curves of muscle beneath the skin.
Beyond its anatomical accuracy, the sculpture embodies the personality, dignity, and enduring legacy of Nico. It is a tribute not just to a single animal, but to the intelligence, emotional depth, and resilience of gorillas as a species, transforming memory and admiration into a timeless bronze artwork that celebrates both life and character.

Tobias Martin
Tobias Martin was born in Wiltshire, 12 miles from Stonehenge. Influenced by his idyllic rural upbringing, and the forces of nature and magic that permeated his childhood surroundings, these works have something of the mystical about them. After graduating from Saint Martin’s School of Art in 1999, he still remains and works in London. His work has been shown within many prestigious, including the Royal Academy. His work can be seen as an attempt to visually articulate a great epistemological challenge: that of the human mind encountering the intellectually imponderable. Each piece is approached with precise observation and an acute interest in the minutiae of the subject matter, manipulating the material with a delicacy and lightness of touch. Despite being realised in heavy materials such as bronze, the resulting piece achieves a sense of movement and character that conveys the essential spirit of the animal. Encompassing elements of sculpture, installation, drawing, performance and video - Tobias’ practice partly relies upon the translation of scientific research methodologies to the processes of art making. This is perfectly applied particularly Tobias’ animal sculptures which capture the characteristic essence of the individual species.

"Jim Jim" Ebony Sculpture with Dark Patina, Portrait of Detroit Zoo Gorilla
Located in Detroit, MI
"Jim Jim" is an ebony carving by Tom Brun, sculptor and Detroit Zoo Keeper, who cared for the real Jim Jim at the Detroit Zoo. This ebony sculpture is in beautiful condition with slight exposure to the lighter streak of wood sometimes found in ebony. It is said that Tom would often go into a house and pick up one of his sculptures and say that it was unfriendly – meaning that it had not been handled enough.
Morley Driver has said of Brun in a newspaper article from the 1950’s “In Any Animal He Sees Beauty”: No one who has ever seen a Tom Brun hippopotamus will ever again think of it as ugly or ungainly, meaning that the artist not only gives you beauty but teaches you to see it. Tom has said: “Small pieces are like a proverb – a gem of meaning that one can dissect.” They are meant to be picked up, caressed and held. Tom knew Jim Jim from birth and cared for him with love and attention. Brun was a compassionate zookeeper and advocated for less cages and more space for an animal to roam.
Brun was born in England in 1913. A few years after the end of World War I his father moved the family in 1919 to Detroit, Michigan. In 1935 at age 23, he officially became a U.S. citizen. He served in the army during World War II for five years and upon discharge and at the age of 36 took advantage of the GI Bill and applied for admission to Society of Arts and Crafts (now known as the College for Creative Studies) where he was gladly accepted.
While at Arts and Crafts his instructors and established artists such as Sarkis Sarkisian, John P. Foster, Morris Brose, Richard Koslow, Patricia Burnett, Lloyd and Renee Radell...
